Dr.Thayaparan Selvanayagam

Dr. Thayaparan Selvanayagam, a luminary of Carnatic flute in Toronto, began his musical odyssey under his late father, Vidwan Suntharam Selvanayagam, a revered Sri Lankan flautist. Gifted with an exceptional intuitive musical ear, he mastered the bamboo flute’s enchanting resonance, weaving melodies that transcend tradition while preserving its purity. His intellectual brilliance mirrored his artistry; he is one among the few Sri Lankans to have earned a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Cambridge. He later pioneered satellite instrumentation for NASA at the University of Toronto, and currently serves as Vice President of a leading R&D corporation, where he continues to lead scientific innovation.

In 2005, he revolutionized Canadian Carnatic heritage by conducting the nation’s first Flute Arangetram. This milestone inspired the founding of Venugānālayam, his esteemed Toronto-based academy, which has since become a two-decade beacon of excellence; uniquely training and presenting all Flute Arangetram artistes in Canada to date. His senior disciples now grace global stages, from Toronto to New York, performing as soloists and accompanists, and carrying forward his artistic legacy.

A rare confluence of science and art, Dr.Thayaparan’s dual mastery has profoundly enriched Canada’s cultural landscape. Through Venugānālayam’s meticulous pedagogy and his own pioneering spirit, he continues to ignite excellence, proving that devotion to both cosmos and rāga elevates humanity.
